Chapter Thirty

Alessandra checked one last time on Matteo, extremely pleased with his vitals. She instructed the staff to alert her if there were any negative changes in his recovery.

She changed, then with her purse slung over her shoulder, stood with her hand on one of the back exit doors of the hospital. She glanced at the message from Carlo once more.

They are a known problem. When your shift is over, leave out the back, east door. Leave your car. Take a cab to the restaurant we’ve gone to the most.

She straightened her spine, pushed open the door and quickly made her way down the block to where she would find a taxi, her head on a continual swivel as she studied her surroundings.

She was grateful her shift ended at a normal time today, 6 p.m. The cafés that surrounded the hospital were overflowing with customers, and the grocery store on the corner had evening shoppers congregating at the entrance and exits. The crowds made her feel safe.

It was a simple establishment. The name, Trattoria Rosa, was etched on the glass of the double doors that were propped open. Light from the large windows on either side of the doors poured onto the patio. Large umbrellas bumped into each other, covering eight tables arranged within a makeshift border of wrought iron and planters growing crawling ivy.

The taxi dropped her off, she scanned the area until she found him. In the shadows of the doorway to the right of the restaurant, she saw Carlo’s unmistakable silhouette.

Relief flooding through her made walking difficult, but the need to touch him propelled her forward. She didn’t stop until she had her arms wrapped around his waist and he was engulfing her. She pressed herself closer into him so he’d tighten his hold. She didn’t cry, there were no threatening tears, just overwhelming relief.

He pulled away and framed her face in his hands. His expression drawn; there were dark circles under his eyes and a general disheveled look about him that Alessandra had never seen before.

Had it really only
